She sagged, her energy depleted, in shock.

"I asked..."

"Very bad."

"What's ... ?"

"I kill. Lose many merits in next life. Very bad."

"No, it depends on who you kill. That wasn't a 'who.' That was an 'it.' An animal."

Sprawled in the bushes, Banks murmured, "What the hell... ?"

"Fourth of July."

He coughed weakly. "Yeah, I think I remember that. Trick or treat."

"We have to move," Rambo said, lifting him.

"Or is that when you wear the white beard and red suit?"

Carrying Banks over one shoulder, clutching the quiver and bow in his other hand, Rambo struggled, Co beside him, away from the shimmering blaze, working toward the dark of the forest.

The pickup site, he was thinking, muscles sore, legs stiff, lungs desperate for air. Have to reach the pickup site.

Behind him, he heard a distant shout. Then another one. Not so far this time.

He rushed.
